My writerly friend Cindy Dorminy has a book release this week. Check out Left Hanging!

LEFT HANGING

As a nurse and single mom, Darla Battle hides her loneliness behind a smile. But when she discovers that the new cute doctor everyone is talking about is her daughter’s father, she knows she needs to keep her distance from the man who abandoned her and their child, Stella.

When Theo Edwards returns to Nashville to finish his medical training, he never expects to run into Darla, a girl he spent one night with seven years ago. For reasons he can’t fathom, her attitude toward him is frosty, but he still hopes to ignite the spark they once felt.

Once Darla realizes Theo doesn’t know he’s Stella’s father, she has no idea how to tell him the truth. And the longer she waits, the more difficult it becomes. When the situation spins out of control, can the two come together for the sake of their daughter? Or is forgiveness out of reach?

After several decades of writing medical research documents, Cindy decided to switch gears and write stories where the chances of happy endings are 100% and the side effects include satisfied sighs, permanent smiles, and a chuckle or two.  She writes romance novels with a slice of humor that range from historical romance to southern fried romantic comedies. Her young adult debut novel, Tuned Into You (BookFish Books) was released in June 2016.

Cindy was born in Texas and raised in Georgia.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Kennesaw State University and her Master’s Degree from The University of Georgia.  Cindy enjoys gardening, reading, bodybuilding and a whole bunch of movies.  She can be overheard quoting lines from her favorite movies… a lot.  But her favorite pastime is spending time with Mark, her bass playing husband, Maddie Rose, the coolest girl on the planet, and fur child Daisy Mae.  She currently resides in Nashville, TN where live music can be heard everywhere, even at the grocery store.

About America’s Next Reality Star:

Title: America’s Next Reality Star

SEEKING THE SMART ONE

Twenty-four-year-old Jen Reid had her life in good shape: an okay job, a tiny-cute Seattle apartment, and a great boyfriend almost ready to get serious. In a flash it all came apart. Single, unemployed, and holding an eviction notice, who has time to remember trying out for a reality show? Then the call comes, and Jen sees her chance to start over—by spending her summer on national TV.

Luckily The Fishbowl is all about puzzles and games, the kind of thing Jen would love even if she wasn’t desperate. The cast checks all the boxes: cheerful, quirky Birdie speaks in hashtags; vicious Ariana knows just how to pout for the cameras; and corn-fed “J-dawg” plays the cartoon villain of the house. Then there’s Justin, the green-eyed law student who always seems a breath away from kissing her. Is their attraction real, or a trick to get him closer to the $250,000 grand prize? Romance or showmance, suddenly Jen has a lot more to lose than a summer . . .

Excerpt:

He touched my chin with two fingers, bringing my gaze up to meet his. Damn those green eyes. I searched them for answers, wishing I knew whether he was putting on an act for the audience. Even with the lights off, the cameras stationed in the yard would capture us. The producers filmed everything, day and night. Everyone in America would know if we kissed. For a moment, I struggled to remember why that was bad.
“I guess it’s not your fault, since I got the question right,” I said begrudgingly, shifting slightly backward.
“If that is the best I can get, I’ll take it. But I’m going to work on complete forgiveness. I’ll pay you double interest on our bet—six cents.”
“Well, then,” I laughed. “Maybe I’ll have to reconsider once I get my money. I’d hate to have to send Birdie to break your kneecaps.”
The image of five-foot-tall Birdie coming after Justin with a baseball bat cracked him up. I laughed, too, crossing my legs and settling more comfortably in the lounger. My knee practically touched Justin’s leg. He didn’t move.
We sat quietly for a few minutes. I wondered if he heard my heart pounding. Even not wanting to get caught kissing on national television with a near-stranger, I found something about Justin irresistible. Possibly his smile. Or his dimples. His brains. The ease of talking to him. His personality. The fact that he was practically perfect for me in every way.
That line of thinking wasn’t helping. I needed to change the subject before I started calling him Mary Poppins.
“It’s a beautiful night.” I gestured at the sky.
“Yes, it is,” Justin said, his eyes never leaving my face. Did he lean forward slightly? Only inches separated our lips.
The warmth definitely wasn’t the beer. I licked my lips nervously and leaned in, closing the gap. If he moved the tiniest bit…
“So—”

Reckless Hearts Teaser _2

Exclusive Excerpt:

He answered on the third ring. “Hey, Gav. You busy?”

“Not Gav.”

My face warmed at the sound of Collin’s voice.

“You there?”

“Um, yes. But I need to speak with Gavin, please.” Keep breathing, keep calm. You’ve got this.

“But I need to talk to you first.”

I clenched my teeth. “May I talk to him, please?”

“Nope.”

I threw my head back against the couch and groaned. “Why not?” If he was going to be short with his answers, I would be short with my questions.

“Need to talk to you about something first. Told you that.”

Could’ve sworn I heard the words Needs to eat your pussy is more like it in the background, but my mind was scrambling like the eggs I’d cooked for breakfast.

“Shut up, asshole,” Collin barked.

I spun a loose string around my finger. “What did you just say to me?”

Total déjà vu.

The wind slapped against his speaker. “Are you driving?” I unraveled the string from my finger and bounced my knee. “Because in the State of Illinois, it’s illegal to drive and talk on a cell phone unless it’s hands free.”

“Damn it, no. She’s putting that shit in her mouth.” He grumbled something else, and the sound of baby giggles tugged on my already floppy heartstrings.

I couldn’t help but smile as I thought about Chloe. I’d only been around her twice, but I kind of missed the little thing.

“Not driving. Just playin’ at the park.”

Playing at the park. Why did the image make me grin? Collin pushing Chloe in her swing, her little baby legs bouncing up and down as he did.

“Why are you calling Gavin anyway?”

“None of your business.” My smile fell. “Can you just put him on?”

“I told you I needed to talk first.”

I rolled my eyes. “Fine. Then talk.”

“Gonna take you out tonight.”

Shock pulled me into an upright position, and I stood so fast that a pile of clean towels fell to the floor. “Um, take me out?” I scrambled to pick them up.

“Gonna apologize. Again. Buy you food, return your sweater too. If you have plans, then cancel them.”

“Uh, no. Don’t think so.” At the simple thought of seeing him again, my stomach clenched in both excitement and unease. “You’re not going to pull that in-charge bullshit on me. And besides, what makes you think I want to see you anyway?”

“You don’t wanna see me, sweetheart?”

I slapped my hand over my eyes. Sweetheart? Seriously? “No. I don’t want to see you, pumpkin. Not when you got me fired from my job the other night with your ultimate-fight-club thing.” I blew out a quick breath. “Besides, I just…can’t.”

“I need a better reason.”

“Are you serious right now?” What was with this guy and his incessant need to be an asshole?

“Dead serious.” He laughed. “I’ll be by your apartment at six to pick you up. Dress casual. Gonna take you to dinner, and then we’re gonna talk. You’re going to get a free meal and an apology. Can’t get much better than that, am I right?”

SOME KIND OF MAGIC Release and Giveaway!

Some Kind of Magic by Mary Ann Marlowe I’m thrilled to be taking part in Mary Ann Marlowe’s Release Blitz for her debut, SOME KIND OF MAGIC! Check out the teaser excerpt, and be sure to enter the giveaway below.

SOME KIND OF MAGICSome Kind of Magic by Mary Ann Marlowe | JenHalliganPR.com by Mary Ann Marlowe Publisher: Kensington Publication Date: January 31, 2017

“An amazing first novel.” —Sydney Landon, New York Times bestselling author In this sparkling debut novel, Mary Ann Marlowe introduces a hapless scientist who’s swept off her feet by a rock star—but is it love or just a chemical reaction?… Biochemist Eden Sinclair has no idea that the scent she spritzed on herself before leaving the lab is designed to enhance pheromones. Or that the cute, grungy-looking guy she meets at a gig that evening is Adam Copeland. As in the Adam Copelandinternational rock god and object of lust for a million women. Make that a million and one. By the time she learns the truth, she s already spent the (amazing, incredible) night in his bed. Suddenly Eden, who’s more accustomed to being set up on disastrous dates by her mom, is going out with a gorgeous celebrity who loves how down-to-earth and honest she is. But for once, Eden isn’t being honest. She can’t bear to reveal that this overpowering attraction could be nothing more than seduction by science. And theonly way to know how Adam truly feels is to ditch the perfume—and risk being ditched in turn. Smart, witty, and sexy, Some Kind of Magic is an irresistibly engaging look at modern relationships why we fall, how we connect, and the courage it takes to trust in something as mysterious and unpredictable as love.

Excerpt from SOME KIND OF MAGIC

I scanned the rest of the room. I wasnǯt surprised to see he had a turntable. Micah had been buying vinyl for years. An entertainment unit held a wide-screen TV and a stack of DVDs. I walked over to check out his movie collection. ANetflix envelope sat on top, and I read the address. The name rang a bell. DzAdam Copeland?dzThen I remembered. Stacy and Kelly had crushed on a rock singer with the same name for a few weeks last summer, another impossibly hot guy with red hair. No, wait, that was a different band. I could never keep their celebrity crushes straight. My eyes went wide. What if this was that same guy? They would die. He was a musician, after all. A wave of nausea crested as I took in my surroundings. The guy certainly had money. Adam glanced up from a stack of records and caught me staring at him. DzWhat?dzDzYour name is Adam Copeland?dz My mind raced. The apartment was his parentsǯ, so the money was probably his parentsǯ, too. If he was a rock star, wouldnǯt he have some lavish penthouse overlooking Central Park? He went back to flipping through albums, nonplussed. DzOh, yeah.dzI narrowed my eyes. If I asked him straight up, heǯd think I was crazy, so I casually sauntered over to the side of his bed and leaned back, facing him. I picked at the hem of my shirt, and then, as though I was teasing, I tested the waters. DzSo, does everyone ask you if youǯre any relation to that guy from that band?dzDzHuh?dz He pulled out a Van Morrison album and then dropped it back down, still on the search for whatever he was looking for. Then it hit me. DzOh, God. Iǯm sorry. It must be an incredibly common name.dzHe froze in place like a deer caught in the headlights, like he had no idea what I was talking about. This was embarrassing. Awkwardly, I fumbled for an explanation, rambling. DzYou know that band? They have a song that gets played about a million times an hour.dzOn the spot, I couldnǯt even remember the bandǯs name. I scraped my brain, tapping my fingers on the bed post. It came to me out of nowhere. DzWalking Disaster!dz
Adam rolled his eyes. DzRiiiight.dz He settled on an album and slid the vinyl record from the sleeve. I hoped I hadnǯt offended him somehow. Maybe it was an irritating comparison. If someone famous had my name, Iǯd find it annoying. What was I thinking? As if some famous musician would just hang out at a club and buy me beers. And flirt. Heǯd definitely been flirting with me. Guys within my limited reach rarely bought me beers and flirted. How much chance would I have with a freaking rock star? I laughed at myself for losing my head temporarily. Unfazed, Adam dropped an album onto the turntable. I smiled as a dead sexy Arctic Monkeys song started. DzI love this song!dzHe sidled up next to me and bumped me with his shoulder. DzSo you like that band, Walking Disaster?dzWas this a litmus-test question? Like asking someone if they like Nickelback? What if he had a checklist, too? What if he only liked girls who listened to the Dzrightdz music and immediately disdained girls who listened to whatever he found uncool? And why did I suddenly care what kind of girls he might like? I shrugged, reaching for a safe nonchalant answer. DzI donǯt normally listen to them unless they come on the radio. I donǯt intentionally listen to much current rock music, except for Micahǯs. But my coworkers gush about that band. They tried to drag me out to see them just recently.dzDzBut you didnǯt want to go?dzDzNo, I wouldǯve gone. But it was at the Meadowlands, and it was a weeknight. I had to get up early the next day.dzDzTo make perfume, right?dz He leaned closer and breathed in. DzWhatǯs the name of this one?dzDzOh, I donǯt know.dzDzMmm. You should call it ǮIrresistible.ǯ It smells nice.dz He lifted my hand and laid a kiss against my wrist. My brain told me I should leave. I barely knew him. But I didnǯt want to leave. Adamǯs lips felt so good against my skin. His dark eyes sought mine, looking for permission, maybe. The naked desire etched on his face sent a tingle through me. I wanted to feel his lips on mine, but he held back, so I bent toward him. He kissed me soft, and I tasted the hint of Jamaican spiced rum.
He broke away and drew back, so close but too far away. His eyes pierced mine, and his breathing hitched, but he hesitated. I felt tethered there, unable to move back, wanting to move forward. I reached up to touch the stubble on his cheek, then that cord on his neck Iǯd wanted to touch earlier. Without another thought, I twisted my fingers in his hair and pulled him back to me.

JR Yates – Pitch Wars Mentor

I’m a Pitch Wars mentor!! Last year I was a mentee and received The Call (i.e., offer of representation) from the fabulous Stacey Donaghy the day after the agent round ended. My experience was so positive—the learning, the community and the opportunity beyond my wildest expectations—I am honoured to have the chance to give back.

Did you notice that I spelled “honoured” with a ‘U’? Don’t worry, that’s not because I suck at spelling. I’m Canadian and we like those extra letters to keep us warm at night. And yes, I know my US spelling conventions as well.

giphy-12

The boring stuff (Don’t skip it! If you have a story that involves communication or French, you’ll like this bit, I promise):

This is me:

giphy-21
Abby Yates

Oops. Wrong Yates.

IMG_3484R
This is me

I have degrees in psychology and linguistics. I’m a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP) in my day job and grew up in a French household in an English-dominant city. So yeah, I know some stuff about human behavior (see? US spelling. I’ve got it down.) and how we communicate.

I live near the Canadian Rocky Mountains, work in public health as an SLP, mother my three young children (in French), and act as best friend to my husband of 14 years (in English, except when we kiss ;)). I love to travel  and have visited every major Canadian city and many international destinations as well.

I write contemporary romance and romantic suspense. I love helping other writers and have worked as a critique partner and beta reader for many other authors (you may see me in an acknowledgment page or two.)

giphy-18

Now that we’ve got that out of the way. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

200-17

WISH LIST

I am looking for ADULT or NA CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE (so please, no historical, western, gothic, etc.).

I want a love story with well-developed characters with real-life relatable struggles. I love angst and heart. I don’t want weak, overused tropes such as, “I have to pretend you’re my wife for X reason. Oh. Okay. Sex. Love. The end.” And, sorry, I don’t dig alpha males who treat women like garbage but the woman’s magical vagina fixes him. Please. Just…no.

200-26

I love a man who is sexy because of who he is at the core, not because he has a tattoo. I want dimension. Sell me the love. Give me a story I haven’t seen before. The overlooked guy. Something unique or diverse. If your manuscript has anything to do with communication disorders, I AM YOUR PERSON.

200-18

If it leans toward women’s fiction or chick lit, I’m grabby hands all over it, but there has to be a central love story for me to consider it. I want to laugh and/or cry. There has to be some fun in there. I love me a little sass and a kick-ass voice.

I’m also open to romantic suspense, magical realism, and M/M romance, but it has to be character driven, and must have some sexy times. I love a hot, heart crushing M/M.

I’ll summarize it in a few words: Hot. Heart. Voice. Inner struggle. Got it?

giphy-14

What I am NOT looking for: historical, inspirational/Christian, science fiction, gothic, horror, western. If I receive any of these, they will be put in my, “This person was not listening pile.”

tumblr_ntm950iGVP1rerowro1_250

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME

I will provide you with a developmental edit letter as well as in-line notes for the entire manuscript. Once you’ve completed those, I will read a second time and help you brush it up. I have a knack for voice and dialogue which I attribute to analyzing how people speak for a living (don’t worry, I won’t judge how you speak in real life. Okay, well maybe just a little.)

tumblr_o3gw05qdu01qiu5xgo1_500

If comma splices are your biggest hurdle, I may not be for you (though I know what they are). Be ready to work hard, and kill some darlings. Our goal will be to get the pacing, story, voice, and character development bang on. If you’re ready to put the work in, kill some scenes, take critiques like a champ, and do it while having fun, we’ll be great together.

giphy-17

But if  you’re like this?

giphy-16
My book is perfect!

Then, well, maybe Pitchwars isn’t for you.

Because I’m looking for this…

200-35

To get an idea of what I enjoy reading, here’s a list of some of my favorite books:

You by Caroline Kepnes

Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens

Nuts by Alice Clayton

The Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll

If any of this speaks to you, then I can’t wait to read your sub!! Looking forward to working with a fabulous mentee to help them develop their manuscript into something that they love and will capture the eyes of agents!

– JR Yates

p.s. This post was brought to you by Wall-E…(meaning ‘E’ is your scavenger hunt letter).
